Being a mermaid isn’t just for little kids and Daryl Hannah anymore. The Silverton Casino in Las Vegas will now allow everyone to learn, from 7 years old to adulthood.
The Silverton opened in 2004 with its mermaid show as its main attraction. The mermaids swam inside the 117,000 gallon tank as a voiceover told hokey stories about them, much like the Fall of Atlantis attraction at the Forum Shops.
The To display was abolished years ago. Now mermaids simply swim and interact with guests through the glass of the aquarium three times a day. To breathe, they use a “hookah” breathing apparatus.
Shoal of fake fish
The Silverton launched its Mermaid School in 2019, for children aged 7 to 12. It was discontinued due to the pandemic shutdown and relaunched in April 2022. Now teens and adults are also allowed on certain dates.
During the 90-minute experience, participants transform into Silverton mermaids and swim among thousands of tropical fish and stingrays (non-lethal) in the tank. Each session includes a warm-up lesson, mermaid glasses and tail (to borrow only!) and a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium and its marine life.
No breathing apparatus is used, since all the swimming is done near the surface of the 15-foot-deep reservoir. All participants need is a bathing suit, towel and strong swimming skills.
The Mermaid School for Kids takes place most Saturday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sessions for teenagers and adults take place on certain Sunday mornings. Children and teenagers receive a party ice cream after class, adults a mimosa. (And the Silverton promises not to mix them!)
Reservations can be made at least 24 hours in advance at silvertoncasino.com.
