A man was stabbed to death Fiday at an illicit gambling joint in Hong Kong. A woman was punched and kicked until she lost consciousness. Suspects have been apprehended.
The standard, an English-language Hong Kong newspaper, reported that the 46-year-old was stabbed in an attack by around half a dozen suspects. His 59-year-old girlfriend lost consciousness for about an hour, the report added. The man was trying to collect a debt when the couple was suddenly assaulted, according to local media.
When she woke up, the woman contacted the authorities. The couple were rushed to Kwong Wah Hospital. The male victim was pronounced dead in hospital. The woman underwent medical treatment. His condition was not immediately available.
Three men and two women suspected of the crime were apprehended by police later on Friday, the South China Morning Post reported. One of the men was arrested at Hong Kong airport. He was trying to get a flight to Thailand, but was stopped at an airline counter, the Job revealed.
Two knives were seized from the scene of the crime. Beyond the knives, the Job reported that the attackers used chairs and metal rods as weapons.
The fatal attack is now being investigated as a murder. The police were looking for witnesses or surveillance video in the neighborhood, the Standard revealed.
The crime scene was a gambling den located in an apartment in the Mong Kok district of Hong Kong. It is a major commercial destination.
The debt the man was trying to collect was over HK$100,000. This equates to approximately US$12,743.
Recent gambling crime in Hong Kong
In an unrelated incident last February, Hong Kong police raided an illegal gambling operation. Two individuals fell 10 stories to their deaths while trying to escape.
The incident took place in an industrial building in the Kwun Tong district, according to the South China Morning Post.
The two suspects attempted to flee by exiting the building through a window. They started making their way along an outside ledge of the Tsun Win factory building. But they were unable to keep their balance.
Both men fell from the tenth floor of the building. Emergency services rushed them to United Christian Hospital. They were both pronounced dead in hospital.
One of the men had a warrant for his arrest. The other man was the building manager.
In addition, five other individuals were playing at the illicit lair. Four women, aged 26 to 62, were taken into custody, as well as a man. They were each charged with illegal gambling.
Police confiscated eight slot machines and 27,000 Hong Kong dollars ($3,464) in cash during the raid.
Hong Kong police officer charged
Earlier, a Hong Kong police officer was one of 48 defendants brought before a local court last August on illegal gambling charges. Authorities allege he was one of the operators of the illegal gambling joint and provided poker games.
Ng Hin Fung, 29, is charged with two counts: operating a gambling establishment and knowingly permitting a prohibited public gathering. The second accusation relates to health protection measures during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He was suspended from his post last year. It is unclear how the case against him was resolved.
